How to measure AI visibility for your app

What’s inside?

Imagine this scenario. You ask an AI assistant to recommend an app in your category. Your competitors appear. Your app does not. So, you try a slightly different prompt, and this time your app is included. But the description is vague, an important feature is missing, and the assistant recommends your product for a use case it does not fully support.

So, is your app visible in AI search or not?

Measuring AI visibility is not as straightforward as checking a keyword ranking. AI-generated answers can vary according to the platform, prompt, market, conversation and information available at the time. There is rarely one stable position to monitor. That does not mean AI visibility cannot be measured. It means app marketers need a broader measurement framework.

This guide explains how to measure AI visibility at every stage of the discovery and conversion journey.

What does measuring AI visibility mean?

AI visibility measurement is the process of tracking how often, where and in which contexts a brand or a product appears in AI-generated answers.

For an app, that includes determining:

    1. Whether AI platforms recognise the app.
    2. Which prompts cause the app to appear.
    3. How the app is described.
    4. Which audiences and use cases it is associated with.
    5. How frequently competitors appear instead.
    6. Which websites and sources influence the answer.
    7. Whether the recommendation generates valuable app users.

This is a broader approach than just simply counting mentions. An app could appear frequently but be described inaccurately. It could dominate broad informational prompts but remain absent from the higher-intent questions that influence downloads. It could also generate traffic without attracting users who activate or retain.

Effective measurement must therefore combine visibility, interpretation, traffic and business performance.

Why AI visibility cannot be measured like a traditional ranking

Typically in ASO, teams frequently monitor a set of keywords and record where a website or app ranks. While rankings can change, the format is relatively familiar. A product occupies a position within a visible list of results. AI-generated answers work differently. The same platform may produce different recommendations depending on the context, language used to phrase the question, market or location, user’s preferences, etc.

Google also explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode can use the “query fan-out” technique, issuing several related searches to explore different aspects of a question. The models and techniques used across those experiences may differ, so the answers and supporting links can vary.  This makes a single “AI ranking” potentially misleading.

Instead of trying to answer what position the app holds, you need to ask How consistently your app appears for the customer needs and show recommendation contexts that matter to our business. This shifts measurement away from one unstable position and towards patterns of visibility, relevance and commercial impact.

Traditional and AI-mediated discovery should be measured together

AI discovery does not operate in isolation from search, app stores or established acquisition channels. Instead, it adds another layer to the discovery journey.

What AI often changes is the beginning of the journey. Traditionally, someone might search an app store or the web, compare several options, review product pages and decide which app to download. With AI-mediated discovery, that early research can be shortened:

    1. The user describes what they need
    2. The AI interprets the request
    3. The AI recommends a shortlist of relevant apps
    4. The user evaluates the recommendations
    5. The user visits a website or app store page
    6. The user decides whether to download.

The starting point may be different, but the rest of the journey remains familiar. Users still assess the app, its positioning and the credibility of the brand before downloading. Traffic generated through AI discovery eventually enters the same conversion funnel as traffic from search, paid campaigns and app stores.

This leads to an important measurement principle: AI-assisted and traditional discovery may begin differently, but both should ultimately be evaluated against the same business outcomes.

AI visibility data should therefore complement ASO, user acquisition and product analytics rather than sit in a disconnected dashboard. The aim is not simply to measure whether an app appears in an AI response, but to understand whether that visibility contributes to meaningful outcomes such as website visits, installs, activation, retention and revenue.

The four layers of AI visibility measurement

A practical framework should evaluate AI visibility across four connected layers.

    1. Presence: Does your app appear?

The first layer measures whether your app appears in relevant AI-generated answers. Some useful metrics include mention rate, recommendation rate, visibility by AI platform, etc. Presence provides an initial benchmark, but it does not tell you whether the app was positioned accurately or recommended persuasively. This brings us to the second layer.

    2. Perception: How does AI interpret your app?

The second layer evaluates the quality of the appearance. It considers finer details of your app, such as the accuracy of the product description, features mentioned, audiences associated with the app, accuracy of pricing, availability and compatibility. Perception measurement helps identify whether AI platforms understand your positioning or are relying on incomplete, inconsistent or outdated information.

    3. Influence: Does the appearance generate action?

The third layer considers whether AI exposure moves the customer further through the journey. Here we’re getting closer to your performance metrics. That might include App Store outbound clicks, product-page views, branded searches, app downloads, registrations, etc. But remember that not every recommendation will result in a directly traceable click. A person may see an app in an AI-generated answer and search for the brand separately later. Referral data is therefore useful, but it is not a complete measure of influence.

    4. Outcomes: Does AI discovery create valuable users?

The final layer connects AI visibility with commercial results. Now you start looking at the bottom-of-funnel metrics, such as onboarding completion, activation, subscription starts, retention, LTV and revenue. The purpose of improving AI search visibility for apps is not merely to accumulate mentions. It is to reach relevant users and contribute to profitable, sustainable growth of your app.

How to measure your app’s AI visibility

Measuring AI visibility requires more than checking whether your app appears in a single answer. You need a consistent process that connects AI mentions with referral traffic, downloads and business outcomes. Here’s a step-by-step route to measuring AI visibility of your app.

Step 1: Build a representative prompt set

Start by identifying the questions potential customers might ask when looking for an app like yours. Include a mix of:

    • Category prompts: “What are the best running apps?”
    • Audience prompts: “What is a good running app for beginners?”
    • Problem-led prompts: “I struggle to stay consistent with running. Which app could help?”
    • Feature-led prompts: “Which running apps offer guided audio coaching?”
    • Comparison prompts: “What are the best alternatives to [competitor]?”
    • High-intent prompts: “Which app should I download to prepare for my first 5K?”

Your prompt set should reflect genuine customer needs, search behaviour, app-store reviews, support questions and product use cases. Avoid relying entirely on broad prompts or internal assumptions about what customers might ask. Focus on the recommendation contexts that matter most to your app rather than trying to test every possible question.

Step 2: Test the prompts consistently

Run the same core prompts across the AI platforms most relevant to your audience and record the data. Here’s what the data collection template may look like.

Date/platform Prompt Did the app appear? How was it positioned? Competitors Source Accuracy issues Next action

Repeat your priority prompts regularly and keep the wording consistent so you can compare results over time.

Because AI-generated answers can vary, do not treat one response as a definitive result. Repeat your most important prompts and look for patterns over time. Remember to keep the core prompt set consistent between measurement periods so you can make meaningful comparisons.

Step 3: Measure visibility, accuracy and intent coverage

Once you have collected the results, evaluate three areas: visibility, accuracy and intent coverage.

    Visibility

    • Mention rate: How often does your app appear?
    • Recommendation rate: How often is it presented as a suitable choice?
    • Share of recommendations: How frequently does it appear compared with competitors?
    • Citation rate: How often are your website, app-store listing or third-party sources cited?

    For example:

Mention rate = prompts where your app appears ÷ total prompts tested × 100

These metrics should be segmented by prompt category. An overall mention rate may hide the fact that your app performs well for broad category prompts but rarely appears for commercially valuable use cases.  If your mention rate is low, focus on improving your app’s visibility in AI searches first.

    Accuracy

Check whether AI answers correctly describe your app. Classify each answer as accurate, partially accurate, inaccurate, outdated or too vague to assess. An increase in mentions is not necessarily a positive result if the product is being described incorrectly.

    Intent coverage

Measure the customer needs and use cases for which your app appears. A running app, for example, might track visibility for complete beginners and returning runners.

Your app does not need to appear for every possible intent. Focus on the use cases the product genuinely serves and those with the greatest commercial value.

Step 4: Track sources, referrals and downloads

When AI platforms provide citations, look for patterns:

    • Is your website being cited?
    • Does your app-store listing appear?
    • Are editorial articles or community discussions frequently used?
    • Which pages are cited most often?

This can reveal whether you need to strengthen your website content, app store listing, digital PR, review strategy or community presence.

You should also monitor whether AI visibility generates traffic and user acquisition. Use your analytics to track AI referral sessions.  This may not capture every AI-influenced journey but will give you a rough idea of the value AI search already generates for you.

Step 5: Measure the quality of AI-influenced users

Once you roughly know how many downloads come from AI, it’s time to measure the quality of those downloads. Where your data allows, compare AI-influenced users with those from other user acquisition sources.

If AI-attributed traffic increases but those users fail to activate or retain, investigate the journey. The AI assistant may be creating inaccurate expectations, or your website and app-store page may not reinforce the use case for which the app was recommended.

Case study: What 769 AI-attributed installs taught us about measurement

For one of our clients operating in a highly specialised app category, AI visibility had already begun to produce a measurable business result.

Following an optimisation project focused primarily on text metadata, the app recorded 769 AI-attributed installs between January and July 2026, according to App Store Connect referral data.

    Of those installs:

    • 129 came from ChatGPT
    • 640 came from Duck.ai

The source breakdown was particularly revealing. Although the optimisation activity did not specifically target Duck.ai, the platform accounted for approximately 83% of the recorded AI-attributed installs.

This gave the team a useful insight into the app’s highly specific audience. Users were not necessarily discovering the product through the most widely discussed AI assistants. Alternative AI-powered browsing and search experiences played a much larger role than expected.

The result demonstrates why you should avoid optimising for a single AI platform. A stronger approach is to improve the clarity and relevance of the underlying product information, then monitor which AI surfaces actually generate results.

It also shows why AI visibility measurement should extend beyond mentions. App Store Connect referral data helped connect AI discovery with an important business outcome: installs.

For app marketers learning how to measure AI visibility, this is an important distinction. Prompt monitoring shows whether the app appears, while referral and acquisition data help reveal whether that visibility leads to action.

How often should you measure AI visibility?

For most app businesses, a structured monthly or quarterly review is a reasonable starting point.

You can also run additional checks after any major changes to the app, such as product releases or pricing changes. The golden rule is to keep the core prompt set stable enough to identify trends but review it periodically so that it continues to reflect real customer needs.

And remember that measurement should lead to decisions. If a metric does not inform content, positioning, product experience, user acquisition strategy, etc., question whether it even belongs in the dashboard.
