tile-appTiles have been getting a lot of press this week and with good reason, it’s a pretty cool product, if not a killer one.  Looking roughly a centimetre square, these little suckers will attach to all the important items we need every day and can be tracked via an iOS application.  So how do they work?  They are powered by Bluetooth and have a 50m to 150m range.  Taking some learnings from Apple the batteries aren’t replaceable and will last a year which, to quote the marketing spiel, will allow you to purchase the latest and greatest tile every year.  The battery powers the Bluetooth but there is also a small speaker contained which will sound an alarm which is pretty handy.   The clever bit is the app allows you to track the item by your ios device and remembers where is last ‘saw’ your tile.  The not so clever bit is there doesn’t appear to be an Android app, let’s hope there’s one in development.  Once downloaded you become part of the Tile ‘matrix’ and the theory is if your item is over 150m away, then hopefully someone beyond that distance will also have the Tile app and their app will anonymously help you track your item and vice versa.   So to work it needs mass scale, there is clearly a huge viral effect but only having iOS cuts down the audience hugely and not something we would recommend but it addresses an area we are all challenged with at some point in our life, where are my keys, wallet and phone?  The area it also addresses which is clearly not part of the marketing activity but will evidently drive sales is spying.  Sadly there are many people out there who will probably attach to their partners car or even their child’s schoolbag.  Watch this app…
